Drug Combo Kills Pancreatic Cancer Cells

Combining gemcitabine with MRK003, an experimental drug, triggers a chain of events leading to pancreatic cancer cell death, researchers from Cambridge reported in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. The researchers explained that when the two drugs are combined, the effect of each one is multiplied, thus intensifying the destruction of pancreatic cancer cells…

DNA sequencing helps identify cancer cells for immune system attack

DNA sequences from tumor cells can be used to direct the immune system to attack cancer, according to scientists. The immune system relies on an intricate network of alarm bells, targets and safety brakes to determine when and what to attack. The new results suggest that scientists may now be able to combine DNA sequencing data with their knowledge of the triggers and targets that set off immune alarms to more precisely develop vaccines and other immunotherapies for cancer.

Plant flavonoid luteolin blocks cell signaling pathways in colon cancer cells

Luteolin is a flavonoid commonly found in fruit and vegetables. This compound has been shown in laboratory conditions to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties but results from epidemiological studies have been less certain. New research shows that luteolin is able to inhibit the activity of cell signaling pathways (IGF and PI3K) important for the growth of cancer in colon cancer cells.

New Treatment Uses Antibodies and Light to Target Cancer Cells

Researchers from NCI’s Center for Cancer Research (CCR) led by Dr. Hisataka Kobayashi have developed a new type of targeted anticancer treatment using photoimmunotherapy—a light-activated “nano-bomb” bound to a monoclonal antibody (mAb) that delivers the cellular disruptor to tumor cells. In experiments in cells grown in the laboratory and in mouse models, the treatment effectively killed cancer cells that had an excess of a protein targeted by the mAb on their surfaces but spared normal cells. These results were published online in Nature Medicine on November 6.
